Wiper blade connector types explained
Buying the right size wiper blade is only half the job. The blade also has to physically attach to your wiper arm — and arms use different connector styles. Getting the size right but the connector wrong means the blade won't mount, or will mount loosely and fail mid-drive.
This guide covers the four connector types you'll encounter on US-market vehicles, how to recognize each one, and what to confirm before you buy.
The four main wiper connector types
Also called: hook, J-hook, standard hook
A J-shaped metal hook clips onto a pin on the wiper arm. Many replacement blade packages include a hook adapter, but the package still needs to match your exact arm.
How to check: Look for a curved hook at the end of the metal arm. Do not use make, model, or model year alone as proof that this is the right connector.
Buying tip: If your blade package includes multiple adapters, compare the hook adapter against the arm before removing the old blade.
Also called: pinch, side pin, side lock
A side-release tab that you pinch to release the blade from the arm. The blade usually locks around the arm laterally instead of sliding into a hook.
How to check: Look for tabs on the sides of the adapter or a release point you squeeze before sliding the blade off the arm.
Buying tip: Pinch tab blades are not interchangeable with hook arms unless the blade package includes the correct adapter.
Also called: top lock, pin, bayonet
A connector where the blade slides onto the arm end and locks with a clip or cap. The release point is usually on top of the blade adapter.
How to check: Look for a straight arm end with a locking cap instead of a curved hook. Adapter shape and size can vary.
Buying tip: Confirm the adapter shape on the package or retailer fitment selector before buying.
Also called: pin arm, 9mm pin
The blade slides onto a fixed pin on the wiper arm. Simple and secure, but not compatible with J-hook blades without an adapter.
How to check: Look for a small fixed pin sticking out from the side of the arm. Pin diameter matters, so do not assume all pin adapters are interchangeable.
Buying tip: Universal blade sets may include a pin adapter, but the adapter must match the pin size and lock securely.
How to identify your connector without looking it up
Lift the wiper arm away from the glass. Look at the end of the metal arm — the part that the blade clips onto:
- J-shaped hook: J-Hook connector.
- Side tabs or squeeze points: Pinch Tab connector.
- Pin sticking straight up from the arm: Top Lock or Pin connector.
- Fixed pin sticking out from the side: Side Pin connector.
If you are not sure, look up your vehicle below. When a fitment record does not have source-backed connector data yet, it marks the connector field as not verified instead of guessing.
Do universal wiper blades fit all connectors?
Most "universal" replacement blades include a J-Hook adapter pre-installed and a set of additional adapters for other connector styles in the box. This works for many vehicles, but not all. Beam blades and specialty OEM-style blades are sometimes connector-specific and do not include adapters.
When buying online, check the product listing for a connector compatibility list or a table showing which adapters are included. If your vehicle uses a Pinch Tab connector and the listing only mentions J-Hook, it will not fit without an adapter.
Does connector type affect blade performance?
The connector is a mounting interface — it does not directly affect how the blade clears the glass. Blade performance depends on the rubber compound, the beam or frame design, and the correct fit against the curve of your windshield. Use the correct connector to ensure the blade is properly seated; a loose or incorrect connection can cause chatter, streaking, or blade detachment at highway speeds.
